Meet Maddy and Katie.  Meet two ballerinas. This was so cool watching them from my lens.  Everything was perfect. I was sliding around on the floor of their dance studio – literally, I mopped the floor.  I woke up the next morning with my neck wore from being on the floor so much with the camera to my face.;) I’m not a dancer – never have been.  In fact, I look pretty silly when I try to dance!  But… I have a great appreciation and respect for it!  Talent of all kinds takes time, strength, courage, practice, heart and dedication to develop.  Maddy is 18 and has been dancing since she was a little girl.  Katie is 15 and has the same record.

I love this picture of Maddy below.  She looks like she is floating on water.  I used a dark background and two lights to shoot most of this.  I wanted to see shadows and depth, so I chose to light from the side.  I had one light about eye level behind a scrim and another almost at the floor, also behind a scrim.  My settings for most of the shoot were around ISO 100, f 1.6 – 2.8, 30 sec, white balance – K temp 4200 for cool and 5600 for warmth .  In photoshop I darkened the edges, cropped and cleaned up the floor.

I have another post of some large print ideas I think will be fun for the girls!  The best is yet to come.:) Enjoy! Jen

Trey was working in the studio and I couldn’t resist.  I saw this on pinterest and created my take on it . I placed a light head right behind Maddy.  It gave me a little flare behind her skirt and I darkened in photoshop and added a vintage coloring.  I love how old it looks! I love how the light captures the muscles in the their legs.  This was pretty cool to see them up on point at the same time, in the same position. I love close photography.  The end of Katie’s shoes are the only thing in focus.  It lengthens her body and poise.

When I was a little girl, I would pretend with my sister Angela that it was my wedding day.  She was the groom or she was my best friend helping me get ready.  Often we said, “When I get married… I want to do…”  The little girl part of me always seems to play a roll in how I shoot weddings.  It was never a thought in my mind as a kid that I would photograph anything, much less weddings!  In fact I didn’t even know I liked photography until I got a job as a stylist for commercial onset photography when I was 19.  I did that for about 5 years.  Still… the photographers were like, ‘the dudes’ and the designers/stylists were ‘the girls’.  Needless to say, I didn’t pay too much attention to the camera.  Besides, we shot with medium format cameras.  Those things are beasts!  Or at least they were, 10 years ago.  Todd and I moved out to Vegas when I was 24, and shortly after I wanted to get back into the photo world again.  I called around and researched a bit and found a wedding photographer that wanted an assistant.  And so it began!  That was 7+ years ago when I made that phone call.  I remember when he handed me an extra camera and said, “Okay… go ahead and start shooting.”  I was like, humm? How do you turn it on?  He was patient with me and very technical with settings, light and business ethics.  I was a young padawan and he was a photo ninja.  2 years later we moved back to Dallas and within a few months the itch came again to be in the photo world.  Today, I’ve owned my company for 5 years and shot over 100 weddings.  Today, the little girl in me comes out in every wedding as I photograph details, smiles and most importantly relationships with family, loved ones, and God.  As I look back I realize, I’ve grown to be my own photo ninja;)

Tessa and Ben said ‘I do’ infront of family and friends at The Belo Mansion in Dallas.  It was a perfect day!  There were little girl dreams everywhere.;) One of my favorite parts of the wedding is photographing the bride getting ready.  I start by getting pictures of the bouquet, the dress, the shoes and jewelry.  Usually the girls are still busy with makeup and hair, so I busy myself with the details.  Hair and make-up shots should be done when the bride is almost finished, or when the finishing touch is being put on.  I ask if possible to have the bridesmaids get into their dresses first before the bride.  That way when they are helping her, they are ready and look perfect in the shot.  Most of the time, this is when Dad shows up to see his daughter.  She is ready and glowing.  Dad, more often than not, I can see him gulp or take a deep breath or cover his mouth in awe of his beautiful daughter.  For me, my eyes water.  Every time.  Tessa’s Dad came in, put his hand over his mouth and then pulled out a tissue and quietly wiped his eyes.  Todd and I have 3 daughters.  This day is right around the corner for him.

I had so many getting ready photos that I decided to split the wedding up into parts.  Part 1 is Tessa and the girls getting ready.  I decided I wanted to show more of the footage or documentary part of what I do.  Setting people up in groups and lines is the tiniest portion of my wedding photography.  Outside of those formal shots, we are cracking up, crying, making fun of silly things, chasing kids, finding details, checking the clock to stay on schedule, meeting families, trying out poses in Vogue and so on.  Truly the wedding day is one of the most exciting days of life.  I am blessed that I get to witness through my lens the most exciting days, over and over and over again.  Enjoy Tessa’s little fairytale wedding that came to pass just a few weeks ago.  ~ Jen

As Emma’s aunt, Even if i wasn’t greatly biased toward the subject, I would still think these pictures are amazing! I love the creativity. You have really managed to capture the beauty of Emma — inside and out.ReplyCancel

Because I have to…  Because I should… Because they are making me…  Making me take pictures… of me. My friends are always asking me, “Jen, when are you going to put more pics of you on your site?”  My reply, “hummm, tonight or soon or yes, tomorrow!”  Ever been camera shy and or you get your pictures back and somehow they never make it into a frame on the wall or on the blog or on your site??  This is me.  I LOVE the camera.  I LOVE being behind the camera.  I FREEZE in front of the camera.  I don’t freeze in any other situation, just when the camera is right in my face.  Pointing at me.  A good friend of mine, Ambyr, took my pictures in late 2010. Yes, 2010. It’s now 2012, only May, but 2012.  And, I’ve cut my hair.:( This post is so I can see my hair – when it was long.;) Just kidding.

Actually, I’ve been wanting to put up more pics of me so you know who I am.  I attended a marketing campaign for entrepreneurs – of which I am and learned more about showing face online.  My talents are behind the camera and in photoshop.  When it comes to Facebook and blogging, I get side-tracked so easily.  Even now, I am sitting here, with plenty to say, but wondering if I should go get a snack, run to the bathroom, think about what to make for dinner, text my husband, and checking the clock cause it’s almost time for me to head out the door to a bridal session at The Milestone in Denton.  Actually, I just thought it would be funny if I could fit any more commas in that sentence.  See!  Side-tracked!  Haha!  I’ll keep posting more of me during my shoots and other events.  One of the responsibilities of my 2nd photographer is to photograph me working too.  He does a great job and I have much more to show.  Those pics can also come with instruction as I will explain what we are doing, what settings I am on and any elements, like lighting, bounce or background we have pulled into the shot.  For now, I gotta run.  Enjoy! Jen

Jen, you are beautiful. I miss your smile from when we were in your ward.ReplyCancel

Welcome Max to my dear friends Jeremy and Emily whom we’ve known for about 13 years.  When Todd and I were first married, we lived in the same apartment complex as Jeremy and Emily.  My husband Todd and Jeremy grew up together.  I remember seeing Emily for the first time.  Do you ever just know that two people are to be together? Jeremy had invited us over for something and we met Emily.  Todd and I went home talking about how perfect she was!  13 years later they are welcoming not one, but two new little bundles to their family!  Jeremy and Emily, we love you guys so much and are overwhelmed with joy with your little family!!  Enjoy! Jen Welcome Violet!  She was sooo tiny!  It’s hard to remember my kiddos being her size – well, my kids were never that small.  My smallest was 7.1 lbs.  If I remember, Violet was in the upper 4′s.  Just a tiny little bean:) Big sister Molly giving some love… Violet’s time to pose… Molly wanted to take the twins outside and take a pic next to her playhouse.  She has two new dolls to play with.  Live ones!;) I had to do a few pics for little Molly!  She was running around the back yard with her polka-dot umbrellas laughing and playing.  Look at her profile on this pic!  Oh, to be 5 again;)
